Driving Test Information
The Theory Test
The test takes place at the theory test centre, in a separated booth, with a touch screen computer. The computer will display 50 multiple choice theory related questions, of which you have 57 minutes to answer using the touch screen. Before the test starts you will be given a set of instructions on how to do the test, and an opportunity to go through a practice session in order to allow you to get used to the layout of the questions and how the test will work. Once you have read the instructions and taken the optional practice test, the test will begin. You need to answer 43 theory test questions correctly out of 50 in order to pass this part of the test.
The Hazard Perception Test
After completing the theory questions section there will be a short 3 minute break. You will then be shown a tutorial video of how the hazard perception section should be performed before going into the actual test. 14 one minute clips will play one after the other, each having a developing hazard of which you must identify in good time. One of the clips will have two developing hazards of which double points are awarded for spotting both. You will use the computer’s mouse to register that you have identified the hazard. Each clip has a maximum of 5 points to be awarded, with 10 on the double hazard clip. You will need to score 44 out of 75 in order to pass this part of the test.
You must pass both the theory and hazard perception sections of the test in order to gain an overall pass. The theory test costs £31.00.
The Practical Driving Test
The Practical Driving Test lasts approximately 40 minutes. The test has been designed to see if you can drive safely and know The Highway Code, and if you can demonstrate this through your driving.
Before your test begins your examiner will ask you to read a number plate at a set distance of 20 metres. If you pass this you can continue with the rest of your test. You will then be asked 2 questions on carrying out car safety checks before you show the examiner how well you can drive. This will include at least 2 manoeuvres from the following: reverse around a corner; turn in the road; reverse parking; an emergency stop. You will fail your driving test if you commit one serious driving error, or sixteen minor driving errors, during your test.
The test costs £62 on a week day or £75 over the weekend.
